Mercedes-Benz develops new braking system for EVs
Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new in-drive brake system for electric vehicles (EVs), which integrates into the electric drive unit instead of the wheel.

Said by the German automaker to represent a major step forward in sustainability, efficiency, and maintenance reduction, the new in-drive brake system is claimed to be “virtually maintenance-free”, eliminating the need for brake pad and rotor replacements.
Rather than placing the brake inside the wheel, the new design integrates it directly into the electric drive unit, either at the front or rear axle. Mercedes-Benz says this setup reduces the space required, minimises wear, and eliminates the risk of rust.
Additionally, this design means no particulate emissions, making it more environmentally friendly. It also eliminates brake noise and the need for routine brake cleaning, according to the company.
The brake system also enables a lighter wheel and tyre combination, which is claimed to reduce unsprung mass and enhances ride comfort. Furthermore, the elimination of brake cooling requirements allows for the use of fully closed wheels, which Mercedes-Benz says significantly improves the vehicle’s aerodynamic efficiency.
