Average speed camera systems are to be installed on Irish motorways for the first time in a bid to catch speeding motorists.<\/p>\n

The system is being installed on a pilot basis on a stretch of the M7 in Tipperary where 40 per cent of motorists are said to ignore the speed limit.<\/p>\n

It will be deployed between Junction 26-Nenagh (West) and Junction 27-Birdhill, covering both directions.<\/p>\n

The system monitors a driver\u2019s average speed while driving through the two points.<\/p>\n

If successful, the system will be introduced in other parts of the country.<\/p>\n

No roll-out date has been confirmed for the pilot system.<\/p>\n

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), which manages Ireland\u2019s main roads, said the location has been chosen after it analysed speed data from the M7 corridor and found that 40 per cent of drivers exceeded the 120 km\/h speed limit in certain sections.<\/p>\n

An identical system has been operational within the Dublin Tunnel since mid-2017, which TII said “has been hugely successful in improving driver behaviour as regards speeding”.<\/p>\n

It claimed the number of drivers exceeding the speed limit of 80 km\/h in this location dropped from about 55 per cent to just over 10 per cent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
