Chicago Pneumatic explains the steps to take to ensure you aren\u2019t overtightening wheel nuts and risking lives.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subtitle s-editor c-parsys-divider__item\">\n<h2 class=\"u-h3 u-mb-beta\">What is a torque limited impact wrench?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph s-editor c-parsys-divider__item s-editor--para\">\n<p>An impact wrench with a torque limited function enables efficient torque level control, with torque limited to the forward direction to prevent overtightening. The tool won\u2019t stop running but the torque will increase more slowly, meaning you can be certain that you haven\u2019t overtightened the nut.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/44o1r7Xy0Ic\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cOperators should always complete the final tightening with a calibrated torque wrench to ensure that the torque applied is accurate and complies with the vehicle manufacturers\u2019 specifications,&#8221; Antoine Tourneux, global product marketing manager, vehicle service air tools, at Chicago Pneumatic said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"subtitle s-editor c-parsys-divider__item\">\n<h2 class=\"u-h3 u-mb-beta\">How does a torque limited impact wrench work?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph s-editor c-parsys-divider__item s-editor--para\">\n<p>There are two types of torque limited technology, both designed to reduce power in the forward direction once a given torque is reached:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mechanic modification (takes place in the wrench\u2019s impact mechanism)<\/li>\n<li>Air flow modification (occurs in the impact wrench\u2019s motor)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a closer look at both types to understand which one delivers the best performance:<\/p>\n<p><strong>a. Torque limited impact wrench with mechanical modifications<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph s-editor c-parsys-divider__item s-editor--para\">\n<p>By biasing either the hammer or the anvil, or both, the two components will \u2018slide\u2019 over each other and the impact will be less powerful, although still present.<\/p>\n<p><strong>b. Torque limited impact wrench with air flow modification<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph s-editor c-parsys-divider__item s-editor--para\">\n<p>There are two types of air flow modification, which are both designed to slow the rotor and therefore deliver less power. To better illustrate, here is a drawing of a non-torque limited air motor.<\/p>\n<p>In a standard non-torque limited impact wrench that has no air flow modifications, the diameter of the air intake port is the same in forward and in reverse. As a result, it typically delivers the same torque levels in forward and reverse. As a result, the impact mechanism driven by the rotor is less powerful. They will also experience more friction at the contact point, which results in heat, and acts as a source of potential failure.<\/p>\n<p>This is where opting for tools with air flow modifications can be a big advantage. Tools with a reduced inlet air flow consume less air and have a significant benefit of reduced vibration compared to tools with mechanical modifications.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the make and manufacturer, tools with air flow modifications can also reduce vibration in the forward direction compared to tools with a non-torque limiting design. This helps to protect workers from The Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), a common yet debilitating musculoskeletal disorder, which is often permanent, but easily preventable, and caused by intensive and repeated vibration exposure.<\/p>\n<p>No matter which technology the tool employs, both mechanical and air flow modifications ensure that once the optimal level of torque is achieved, it is not exceeded. This helps avoid the risks associated with overtightening.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-with-image c-parsys-divider__item s-editor--para\">\n<div class=\"s-img-container\">\n<p><strong>Air line installation<\/strong><br \/>\nIn order to get the most out of your pneumatic tools, remember to ensure that the air line is correctly installed and maintained. It\u2019s important to note that all manufacturer recommendations are based on an air inlet pressure of 6.3 bars \/ 91 psi.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subtitle s-editor c-parsys-divider__item\">\n<h2 class=\"u-h3 u-mb-beta\">Are torque limited the same as shut-off tools?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph s-editor c-parsys-divider__item s-editor--para\">\n<p>Shut-off tools include a shut-off function which monitors the torque in the forward direction to prevent overtightening. The tool will stop running when the given torque is reached.
