Volkswagen recalling 100,000 EVs over battery fire risk

The Volkswagen Group is recalling almost 100,000 of its electric vehicles due to issues linked to battery modules.

According to Germany’s motor vehicle authority (KBA), who is overseeing the recall, the defect can lead to reduced driving range and may pose a fire risk.

The recall notices affect almost 75,000 vehicles from Volkswagen Group’s ID. series (ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.Buzz), as well as around 20,000 Cupra Born models produced between February 2022 and August 2024.

Volkswagen Group Ireland said the recall affects around one per cent of all ID. series models sold here.

It said affected owners may see a reduction in their electric vehicle’s driving range or the illumination of a yellow warning indicator in the vehicle.

“The extent of any potential reduction in range cannot be stated in general terms, but in individual cases it may be noticeable,” the company said.

“In very rare cases, there is also a possibility of thermal overload within a battery module, which in extreme situations could lead to a fire.”

Volkswagen Group Ireland said customers will be contacted in the coming days to arrange the necessary steps and to schedule an appointment with their service centre.

It also said that no personal injuries have been reported in connection with this issue.
