Some Irish petrol and diesel car owners to be offered €8,500 EV grants

Government will today put forward plans to offer some petrol and diesel car owners an €8,500 grant towards the purchase of a new electric vehicle (EV).

The pilot State scrappage scheme would be applicable to combustion cars that are more than 13 years old, the Irish Times has this morning reported.

The price cap for the existing EV grant scheme, which provides a €3,500 grant to those purchasing an EV, is also expected to fall from €60,000 to €50,000 from 31st July.

Owners of petrol and diesel cars aged 13 years and above would be eligible for a €5,000 scrappage grant and an additional €3,500 towards a new EV.

The Irish Times said it would operate on a first-come, first-served basis until the €10 million fund is exhausted.

Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien is expected to brief today’s Cabinet meeting about the pilot scheme and updates to the existing EV grant scheme.
