Porsche tractor restoration gives TY students hands-on experience

In an example of collaboration within the automotive industry, Express Spares, Gedore Automotive, and FMK Rustproofing have joined forces to support the Porsche Junior Restoration Project — an initiative giving Transition Year students from the Mercy Secondary School Ballymahon in Co Longford, hands-on experience in classic tractor restoration.

The project offers young enthusiasts the opportunity to work directly on a German-engineered Porsche tractor, developing mechanical skills, technical understanding, and a deep appreciation for precision craftsmanship. It’s a unique blend of education, engineering, and passion for automotive excellence.

Empowering Young Talent
Express Spares was immediately drawn to the project’s mission of equipping students with practical skills and a respect for quality workmanship. The company firmly believes that exposure to professional-grade tools and standards from an early stage helps raise the bar for the next generation of automotive professionals.

“When we heard about the project, it felt like a natural fit,” Darragh McKiernan from Express Spares, said. “Giving students access to high-standard tools and real-world experience is exactly how we build the future of the trade. It also complements our Drivetrain initiative, which is focused on integrating parts, tools, and technical expertise to drive skill development across the automotive sector.”

Gedore Quality and Craftsmanship
The project’s technical backbone comes courtesy of Gedore Automotive, whose name has been synonymous with precision toolmaking in Germany for over a century. Thanks to Robert van der Meer and Patrick Mau from Gedore, the students now have access to two professional tool trolleys and complete tool sets for the duration of the project.

Meer and Mau were quick to lend their support, driven by a shared passion for getting top-quality tools into the hands of young mechanics. It’s a fitting partnership — after all, Gedore tools are used by professionals around the world, including Porsche themselves. Now, German-made tools will help restore a German tractor.

FMK Rustproofing Adds Finishing Touches
To ensure a truly professional restoration, FMK Rustproofing has joined the initiative, providing blasting services that will enhance both the tractor’s finish and the students’ understanding of surface preparation and corrosion protection. Their contribution ensures that the final results meet the same standards expected in professional workshops.

A Shared Vision for the Future
Together, Express Spares, Gedore, and FMK Rustproofing share a clear goal — to inspire and equip the next generation of automotive professionals. By combining expertise, resources, and a commitment to education, these partners are not only helping to restore a classic Porsche tractor, but also nurturing the future of the automotive aftermarket.

In an era when skilled craftsmanship is more valuable than ever, initiatives like the Porsche Junior Restoration Project is a reminder that the passion for precision, performance, and quality begins with the right tools — and the right mentors.
