New lighter Volkswagen Golf with MP reduced by 23%
Volkswagen’s new Golf will be 100 kilograms lighter than the current model. This is primarily achieved by using stronger steel to minimise the metal content. According to Volkswagen, the new materials and production processes form an important part of the Volkswagen Group’s new ‘MQB modular manufacturing system’. This will be extended to more than 40 small and mid-sized models, to cover about 3.5 million cars.
A revised version of the new Golf will be unveiled on September 4, and be officially launched at the Paris Motor Show later next month. The new Golf is part of Volkswagen Group’s plans to overtake Toyota and General Motors to become world No. 1 for new car sales by 2018.
With a new CO2 VRT system about to be announced for our market, the reduced fuel consumption offered in the new Golf will be a boost to Volkswagen as it also delivers lower carbon dioxide emissions. The word is that the new Golf will emit 13.9 percent less CO2 per car.
JATO Dynamics figures show the Golf is Volkswagen’s best-selling model in Europe, with sales of 493,855 in 2011.
