Free EV training courses launched
Free IMI-accredited electric vehicle maintenance and repair training courses commenced at the start of December in Roscommon, which are now running on a regular basis until the end of March 2026.
These courses are not just available to technicians, mechanics, bodyshop refinishers, tyre trade operatives etc. in The immediate region around Roscommon, but to anyone in the auto aftermarket nationwide.
The dedicated training courses were developed by Roscommon County Council (RCC), in association with Galway Roscommon Educational Training Board (GRETB) and funded by the EU Just Transition Fund (JTF).
The EV-WT Training Programme is fully funded by the JTF and, crucially, is free to participants across Ireland.

Organisers say the courses represent an excellent opportunity for technicians, mechanics and body repairers to be up-skilled to work on EVs and to stay abreast of the changes to the motor sector which are rapidly approaching.
All levels from one to four, according to demand, will be available. The courses all take place in RCC’s dedicated workshop on the Racecourse Road in Roscommon Town.
The level one course runs for a half day, while levels two and three will occupy a full day. The level four courses will run for three-days. So it is envisaged that levels 1 and 2 will be sufficient for those working around EV power sources, such as operatives in the bodyshop/refinishing, tyre fitting, etc.
For technicians, mechanics and apprentices in main dealerships and independent workshops, all levels are recommended.
“At present, there is a major lack of skilled mechanics able to maintain and repair electric vehicles and the need for more qualified mechanics will grow as Ireland decarbonises the transport sector,” said a spokesperson for RCC.
“The training programme is designed to help fill that skills gap. The availability of qualified tradespeople will help to further mainstream the use of electric vehicles, supporting local and national initiatives.
“Graduates of the training will be well placed to take advantage of the growing demand for technicians in the sector,” they added.
