A tragic warning to us all to respect road-side workers

Last Sunday week, 37-year-old vehicle recovery technician Ryan Balls was killed while he was helping a stranded motorist on a dual carriageway in Norfolk in England.

This tragedy got me thinking about the lack of respect that the vast majority of us have for road-side workers, with the speed we travel by where roadworks are in place. It is even worse where breakdowns are being dealt with at the roadside, because there is no advanced warning of a speed restriction, or to slow down due to road-side work in progress.

Please consider the tragic incident detailed here when you next approach roadworks or a roadside vehicle breakdown.

Father of four Ryan Balls attended a break down on the A11, where he was struck by a black Ford Puma ST while standing outside his vehicle.

Emergency treatment was provided with an air ambulance flown in, but Mr Balls was pronounced dead at the scene. The teenage driver of the Ford was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. They were later released on bail until December as investigations continue.

It was reported heartbroken partner Sophie Bailey found out about the death of her significant other after his phone tracker stopped moving from the scene of a fatal crash.
