Motul celebrates 50 years of 300V

2021 is landmark year for Motul 300V as it celebrates its half century. This makes it a really important anniversary, not only for Motul and 300V itself, but also for the automotive lubricant industry as a whole.

Motul has a long history of innovation in vehicle lubrication, and throughout more than 150 years it has constantly exercised its right to invent. Motul has truly been at the forefront of product development in the automotive lubricant industry, bringing the world three key new types of oil that have really shaped the way vehicles have been lubricated ever since.

In 1953 Motul introduced the world’s first multigrade motor oil: Motul Century. 1966 was also a hallmark year in Motul’s pursuit of invention, with the creation of Century 2100, the inaugural semi synthetic oil, hailed by the whole automotive sphere as the industry’s next catalyst to high performance.

Then, inspired by Motul’s 300 victories in competition, and enabled by this semi-synthetic technology forerunner, Motul 300V was born in 1971. It used Ester technology, gained from experience in the aviation industry and thus, with 300V, Motul launched the very first fully synthetic motor oil onto the worldwide market.

The first car to benefit from 300V, in the public eye, was the March 711 Formula One race car of Frenchman Henri Pescarolo. Motul has been filling the needs of motorsport customers at the highest levels ever since, on two wheels as well as four.

Motul lubricates current World Champion, Juan Mir and the Suzuki and Pramac Ducati teams in MotoGP, as well as top line motorbike teams around the world in all forms of two-wheel bike sport. It also fulfils the needs of Le Mans winners and World Endurance Champions United Autosports in the LMP2 category, and has lubricated Subaru to many World Rally Championship crowns.

Motul 300V is still considered the reference lubricant in motorsport and Motul has developed 300V over the years to fulfil a number of differing, specific-engine needs, with various iterations of its flagship product.

Winning in motorsport has always, however, only been a means to an end for Motul – so the world’s race tracks have served as testing and proving grounds that have allowed new technology to be developed for use by motorists everywhere.

Nowadays fully synthetic oils are no longer, of course, only the preserve of race cars, bikes and trucks but are commonplace for use in engines everywhere. Fully synthetic and semi-synthetic lubricants are standard fare and, of course, Motul’s range is a comprehensive one in all categories. 300V is still going strong in competition, but for road use it has spawned the 8100 and 6100 ranges for cars, the Tekma range for CVs and the 7100/710 range for motorbikes.

In addition, Motul has a number of lubricant ranges that feature its trademarked Technosythese Ester-based technology, which owes much to the development of 300V. All of these product ranges, as well as transmission oils, brake fluid, coolants and Motul’s range of sprays and Motul’s new car care product range can be accessed in Ireland through Alpha Lubricants.

Motul is justly proud of its pioneering role in bringing new types of lubricants to the industry. The technology that Motul brought to racers in 1971 has long since filtered down to the benefit of road users everywhere so, when celebrating the 50th anniversary of 300V, you are, in truth, celebrating the birth of the current generation of motor oils, everywhere.
