NTN-SNR’s new ceramic ball wheel bearing, which has been developed for the new limited edition Jaguar XE SV Project 8 was a fianlist in the recent Autotemechanika Frankfurt Innovation Awards.
The new ceramic ball wheel was selected by a judging panel from over 120 entries to be entered into the 2018 Automechanika Innovation Awards.
NTN-SNR has used ceramic ball technology in the new wheel bearing used in the new Jaguar XE SV Project 8. This technology has already been developed and tested in single seater race cars and 24 hour Le Mans race cars.
The main benefit of this technology is the considerable weight savings of 210 grams per bearing, this gives a 840-gram overall reduction in weight which helps contribute to the vehicle’s overall performance. Ceramic ball bearings allow for better rigidity of the bearing when it is fitted to the vehicle.
That extra rigidity helps reduce deformation of the bearing when the vehicle is being used on the race track. This helps, in turn, to ensure the excellent dynamics required in the chassis of a vehicle with a top speed of nearly 200 mph.
The ceramic balls used in the bearing also generate far less friction than a than a conventional steel ball bearing, allowing the bearing to rotate much easier. The reduced friction improves both performance and fuel consumption.
