NGK-sponsored Greg Hancock undergoes operation to repair shoulder

NGK-sponsored World Speedway Champion Greg Hancock has undergone a successful operation to repair the damage in his left shoulder that cut his season short.

The four-time champion dislocated the shoulder three times in a matter of days in July and shortly after took the decision to end his season early in order to fully repair the damage and ensure he returns in 2018 100 percent fit.

While under the knife, surgeon Dr Ulf Nordenson also discovered that Greg had a torn bicep tendon but he and his team at Sportsmed Gothenburg repaired the shoulder within an hour and Greg is now back home in Stockholm.

He said: “Obviously I’m pretty sore now but I’m glad that the operation was successful and a huge thank you to Dr Nordenson and his team for looking after me. Everyone knows that I didn’t want to end my season as early as I did but it was the right choice and now I’m fully focused on getting back to fitness and being 100% ready for next season.

“I also want to thank Dr Klas-Göran Gravander, who always manages to get me hooked up with the right people and the right places in my time of need – I’m forever in debt to him so thank you Doc!”

Greg is hoping to head to Torun next weekend (October 7) for the penultimate Speedway Grand Prix round of the year, before beginning a Winter of intense rehabilitation.

He said: “I am not 100% sure yet but I am trying to be in Torun. It’s my home club in Poland so I’m aiming to head over there and meet some of the fans before I get my head down and start my rehab.
“It’s going to be a long, hard Winter and my focus is fully on building the shoulder back up to full strength so I can get back on the bike as soon as possible. Thank you to all the people who have sent messages and supported me – and I’ll see you next season!”

Mark Hallam, Marketing Manager, NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said: “We are delighted that Greg’s operation was a success and look forward to seeing him back racing next year.”

NGK – the leading supplier of original equipment (OE) spark plugs, glow plugs and NTK Lambda and other engine management sensors – has been a long-time supporter of Speedway and recently announced it is sponsoring Greg’s 12-year-old son Wilbur.

Fellow NGK-sponsored riders Emil Sayfutdinov and Matej Zagar currently lie in fifth and eighth place respectively in this year’s FIM Speedway Grand Prix series with two rounds to go.
