NGK OE selected on Mercedez-Benz four cylinder petrol engines

Mercedes-Benz has selected NGK spark plugs for its four-cylinder petrol engines.

The vehicle manufacturer’s M274 engines and M270 transverse engines all leave the production line fitted with NGK spark plugs.

SP-Mercedes-Benz2The 1.6-litre engine uses NGK’s SILZKFR8B7S (originally used in the AMG M133 engine) while the 2.0-litre versions are fitted with SILZKFR8C7S.

Tim Ward, Deputy General Manager – Sales & Marketing, NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd, said: “As a company we have enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Mercedes-Benz and are delighted that our spark plugs are to be used in all its four-cylinder petrol engines.

“Mercedes is one of the world’s premium vehicle manufacturers and the fact that we have been selected as sole supplier is tribute to the work that our original equipment team does to satisfy their exacting requirements.”

Both spark plugs are M12 types with a long insulator design. In contrast to spark plugs with an SAE terminal, they come with an insulator lengthened by several millimetres and a cup-shaped terminal. This design prevents flashovers and electrical failures even if extreme ignition voltages are applied.

The insulator is manufactured from a ceramic of exceptional dielectric strength. The insulator nose heats up very quickly to improve the cold start characteristics of the plug. Additionally, the high ignition voltages and combustion temperatures that can occur in these engines result in insignificant wear at the 0.8mm thin, two-step centre electrode, which is made from highly alloyed Iridium.

Both part numbers feature a ground electrode of the SPE (Square Platinum Electrode) design, with tapered edges and platinum block welded to the electrode to guarantee optimal mixture accessibility and resilience against wear.

Both spark plugs come with a directional ground electrode, which is welded to the metal shell, oriented towards the respective thread cut to ensure the highest ignition reliability in direct injection engines.

SILZKFR8C7S features an advanced spark position, optimised especially for stratified direct injection used by some of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder models from Mercedes-Benz.
