Junior Transport Minister instructs RSA to address driver testing delays

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has been told that the current waiting times for driving tests “are far in excess of what is acceptable”, and has been instructed by Junior Transport Minister Séan Canney to devise a plan to deal with them.

The Minister yesterday met with the RSA leadership at government buildings, where he gave the RSA two weeks to come back with a plan to ensure these waiting times are restored to a 10-week waiting time target as soon as possible.

The latest figures for March 2025 show the average waiting time for a driving test was 24 weeks.

“The current delays in the driver testing system are simply not acceptable,” the Minister said. “I fully understand the frustration being experienced by people right across the country – it is entirely understandable and justified.”

“The RSA has a clear responsibility to meet its target of a 10-week waiting time, and I am determined to see that this happens.

“I have instructed the RSA to return in two weeks with sustainable proposals which will provide a faster resumption to the service level agreement,” he added.
