HGV traffic volumes increased in lead-up to Christmas

Traffic volumes in Ireland increased in the run up to Christmas but has since declined sharply, according to the latest Transport Bulletin from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

It found that HGV traffic rose from the start of December and was 33.1 per cent higher in Dublin in the week of December 20 compared to the same week in 2019.

HGV traffic was also 34.5 per cent higher in the rest of the country, the CSO found.

This rise in HGV traffic is no doubt due to the impact Covid-19 has had on commerce, with government restrictions forcing consumers to shop online.

Increased heavy goods vehicle traffic will also lead to increased commercial vehicle workshop maintenance and repairs, due to further mileage and tyre wear than before.

The findings in the CSO bulletin can only been viewed positively for CV workshops throughout the country.
