Drivers to face fine and points for dangerous overtaking of cyclists

New legislation aimed at protecting cyclists on Irish roads will come into effect from midnight tonight.

It means that any motorist caught dangerously overtaking a cyclist will incur a fixed charge fine of up to €120 and a minimum of three penalty points.

Road safety campaigners have stressed that a driver should give cyclists 1.5 metres of space when passing in zones with speed limits over 50kph and one metre where the limit is 50kph or lower.

Nine cyclists have been killed on Irish roads so far this year.
