Claremorris mourns passing of Martin O’Brien

From near and far, hundreds turned out at the weekend to pay their final respects to one of Claremorris’ best known and respected businessmen. At the age of 50 and having bravely battled a short illness, Martin O’Brien passed away peacefully on Thursday morning last, March 28, at University College Hospital in Galway.Martin-OBrien-217x300

Businessman, family man and community leader, Martin’s life epitomised all that is good about Claremorris. A man with unwavering community spirit, Martin volunteered his time selflessly to the betterment of the local community through his dedication and commitment to the Claremorris Swimming Club, Town Hall and Race Course Committees

Martin’s direct involvement with the development of the new Leisure Centre at the site of the old Swimming Pool is a lasting legacy to his time and effort on the project. As a past president of Claremorris Chamber of Commerce, he followed the footsteps of his father, carrying out the role with high esteem.

O’Brien’s Garage on D’Alton Street was established by Paddy O’Brien in 1956 and Martin joined his father in the garage in 1981. The business thrived as the family built up a valued reputation in sales and service and as the business continued to prosper, a new dealership branch was opened in Ballina, run by Martin’s brother Pat. Martin later inherited the business in Claremorris and continued to build on the wonderful reputation established by his late father.

In addition to the business and his work in the community, Martin was a wonderful family man. He was a devoted husband, father, son and brother and his passing has left his family and the community bereft of a wonderful spirit and a true gentleman.

Relatives, friends and colleagues in the business community travelled from all over Ireland and abroad to pay their final respects. He was laid to rest on Easter Sunday in St Colman’s Cemetery, following a moving Funeral Mass in the parish church.

Martin was pre-deceased by his parents, Paddy and Sadie. He is mourned by his devoted wife Cathy, adoring daughters Sarah, Kate and Lisa, loving brother Pat and sisters Mary and Lily, and extended family. Martin will be deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
