BYD launches its first plug-in hybrid SUV

Expanding its presence in the Irish market, BYD has increased its model line-up with the arrival of the new BYD Seal U Super Hybrid, a plug-in hybrid SUV with intelligent BYD Super DM technology.

Representing a pivotal moment for the automaker, its arrival marks BYD’s ambition to enter the highly competitive hybrid segment after successfully establishing itself with a top-five position in Irish EV sales as of September 2024 YTD.

Featuring a ‘DM-i’ drivetrain, the BYD Seal U Super Hybrid is the first PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) with BYD’s exclusively developed Super DM (Dual Mode) Technology in Ireland, with the “i” standing for intelligence.

An integral part of the BYD Super DM Technology package is a bespoke version of BYD’s acclaimed colbalt-free Blade Battery. Designed for the hybrid platform with power capacities ranging from 18.3 kWh and a pure-electric range of up to 80km, the Blade Battery comes with DC swift charging capability of 30 to 80 per cent in just 35 minutes.

Its self-developed 1.5-litre Xiaoyun petrol engine is said by BYD to be the “world’s highest thermally-efficient petrol-driven engine”. With brake thermal efficiency of 43 per cent, it boasts fuel efficiency that meets long-range emissions standards. Its highly-integrated powertrain incorporates high-speed dual motors, dual controllers and advanced oil-cooling.

BYD claims the Seal U delivers a combined range of up to 1,080km and fuel consumption of 6.4 litres per 100km. In addition, the Seal U Super Hybrid has a battery capacity of 18.3 kWh, an all-wheel-drive acceleration of 0-100km/h in just 5.9 seconds, and the appeal of a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Standard safety features include Blind Spot Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Change Assist, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Two models make-up the new BYD Seal U Super Hybrid range in Ireland: ‘Boost’ and ‘Design’. Prices for the entry-level Boost version are from €42,150, while the higher spec Design is priced from €49,140. Both are now available through six main dealers: two in Dublin and one in Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Wexford.

There is a choice of four body colours, with an ‘ocean’ design carried over from the Dolphin and Seal models already available. Aerodynamically designed 19-inch wheels are said to reduce drag, while the SUV’s headlights deliver a powerful beam echoed at the rear in a full-width taillights arrangement.

Inside, ‘Oceanic Crystal’ gear levers and control buttons mirror its ocean design exterior. Other focal points are its centre console with double-layer storage compartment, and rotatable touchscreen with connectivity and infotainment features.

Equipped with standard navigation and apps, 4G connectivity delivers advanced infotainment with intelligent voice control and online access to latest advancements.

Features include an electric sliding sunroof, air conditioning and purification, keyless entry, ambient lighting, noise and vibration reduction, advanced heads-up technology displaying critical data on the windscreen, and a cutting-edge sound system.

Comfortable multifunctional driver and passengers seats have electric adjustment and memory functions. A flat floor with generous legroom adds to its comfort and roominess. Its 425-litre boot expands to a spacious 1,440 litres. The BYD Seal U Super Hybrid also boasts vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology which can be used to charge external devices.
