BorgWarner’s AWD coupling enhances traction for Volvo XC40

BorgWarner tells us that it enhances driving performance and pleasure with its latest all-wheel drive (AWD) coupling for Volvo’s new XC40 compact SUV.

Featuring integrated vehicle dynamics software, the compact and lightweight AWD solution provides high torque accuracy and distributes torque between the front and rear axle on demand, enhancing handling, traction and stability on nearly all terrains while improving fuel economy.

“Thanks to our extensive know-how in developing AWD technologies, our coupling delivers both enhanced dynamics and traction for an outstanding overall driving experience,” said Dr. Stefan Demmerle, President and General Manager, BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems.

“With our leading solutions for combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles, we offer our customers a variety of possibilities to further enhance the capabilities of their products. The expansion of our long-standing cooperation with Volvo reflects the trust customers put in our products.”

BorgWarner’s latest AWD coupling is equipped with an integrated electronic control unit (ECU) featuring adaptable vehicle dynamics software to provide the desired driving characteristics.

The AWD solution features an electronically controlled wet multi-plate clutch, which automatically distributes the required amount of torque between the two axles for the best possible traction on practically all surfaces.

Operating independently of the differential speed between the two axles, the AWD coupling can offer full locking torque at any given time and speed, depending on road conditions and vehicle load distribution.

The coupling’s lightweight, high-performance design also contributes to improved fuel efficiency, while its best-in-class response time, torque density and accuracy significantly enhance handling and traction.
