BMW to launch hydrogen car in 2028

BMW plans to launch its first-ever series production fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) in 2028, on the basis of the jointly developed next-generation powertrain technology with Toyota.

The series production models will be integrated into BMW’s existing portfolio, meaning the German marque will offer an existing model in an additional hydrogen fuel cell drive system variant.

As FCEV technology is another form of electric vehicle technology, BMW said it will complement the drive technology used by battery electric vehicles (BEV) and next to plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and internal combustion engines (ICE).

No information has been released regarding the chosen hydrogen production model, but BMW had been recently testing a hydrogen-powered iX5 (pictured) which ran with six kilos of compressed hydrogen in two tanks, giving it a range of over 480km.

BMW’s partnership with Toyota also means that both car brands will launch a hydrogen-powered car in 2028. The carmakers have said their respective models will maintain their “distinct brand identities and characteristics”, i.e. no model crossover.
