Automatic transmission fluid explained


Lubricants are the lifeblood of a vehicle and just as an engine oil keeps the components inside well lubricated and performing at the best possible level, Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) protects the components inside automatic transmissions.

An ATF is specifically designed to meet the needs of transmission systems, which have unique requirements that are not found in other mechanisms. For example, a transmission system will need a fluid that provides pressure to the valves and protection for components such as the torque converter – An ATF addresses these issues and much more.

To meet the challenging conditions inside an auto gearbox, ATFs use additives for enhanced lubricating qualities. They are resistant to wear and enhance the rust and corrosion resistance of the metal surrounding them. They are also strengthened with detergents and other compounds that protect and clean metallic surfaces. They also provide stable viscosity across a wide temperature range and other compounds, extending the lives of seals.

The majority of damage that a gearbox suffers takes place during gear shifts, high-speed operations and start-up. The transmission starts taking damage from the very first second the engine is started up. As the lubricating fluid rests in the sump, the gears start turning, increasing the friction. During these key moments, low-grade lubricants won’t be able to prevent damage to the transmission, but a high-quality fluid can protect the mechanism at both low and high temperatures. Also, as the temperatures increase the components are put under greater stress. High-quality lubricants don’t lose their lubrication properties, even at these higher temperatures.
