1.8-litre Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid SUV on the way

Toyota Ireland is following the successful launch of the Corolla Cross 2.0-litre hybrid electric with the addition of a new 1.8-litre hybrid version.

The Corolla Cross 1.8-litre hybrid is available to order from dealerships now (although the price will not be announced until March), with a delivery date in this summer.

Toyota boasts that fifth-generation technology provides more power, efficiency, and an exceptional driving experience. You should be able to test that for yourself by this summer.

The Japanese carmaker says that the Corolla Cross offers more to customers who want to keep connected while on the move. It features the latest Toyota Smart Connect multimedia system, with a 10.5-inch central touchscreen display with high-definition graphics.

With a new faster processor, the latest High Definition, 10.5-inch touchscreen Multimedia infotainment system features wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto connectivity, and a Toyota Smart Connect package.

It adds that customers can now experience the convenience of Cloud navigation, road events, a voice agent and over-the-air updates. In addition, it also promises a suite of connected services from MyT App include driving analytics, car location, and even remote-control features such as climate schedule and door locking.

The Corolla Cross will be equipped with T-Mate, which Toyota claims will combine the latest generation Toyota Safety Sense package with other active driving and parking assistance systems (depending on the spec. grade buyers opt for), to not only make driving easier and safer, but also to protect all vehicle occupants as well as other road users in various scenarios.

Zoe Bradley, head of marketing communications and corporate affairs in Toyota Ireland commented: “We are excited to announce the expansion of our Corolla family with the addition of a new 1.8-litre hybrid electric powertrain.

“A truly practical and stylish solution for busy, growing families, the spacious mid-size SUV provides a thoroughly enjoyable, comparatively low-cost driving experience perfect for ferrying the family to school and sports, and on longer holiday trips.

“Packed with impressive infotainment and safety technology Corolla Cross makes even the most mundane driving trips an absolute pleasure.”

She added: “In line with our ‘Built for a Better World’ brand promise, and our Kaizen (continuous improvement) philosophy, the new Corolla Cross is built on our 5th generation hybrid technology, meaning even better efficiency and lower emissions.

“We are confident that Irish motorists who are looking to move away from diesel into a more environmentally sustainable vehicle will take pride in their choice, while of course enjoying the phenomenal driving experience Corolla Cross offers, without compromise.”

Toyota reminds us that hybrid electric cars account for more than 90 per cent of its passenger car sales in Ireland. It adds that the arrival of the new 1.8-litre model will open up the Corolla Cross to an even wider market, offering the perfect balance of the efficiency and performance matched with the benefits of the affordability and reliability that Toyota is renowned for.

Toyota says that the continuous improvement of its hybrid electric technology has achieved a 140 DIN hp/103 kW output from a 1.8-litre powertrain enabling 0-100 km/h acceleration in 9.9 seconds. This performance comes with efficient CO2 emissions – 112g/km (CO2 values pending final homologation) according to their model specification (WLTP combined cycle).

It adds that efficiency is ensured by the system’s ability to switch to zero emission, all-electric (EV) operation whenever possible, according to the driving conditions and driver inputs.

Toyota claims that the technical improvements are not confined to the balance of power and efficiency. It says that drivers will appreciate a rewarding experience at the wheel, with a perfectly tuned relationship between their use of the throttle and the car’s response. Performance is consistent, predictable and controllable, making for confident driving on every journey.

The 1.8-litre model uses the same GA-C platform as the 2.0-litre model with the main difference being the change from a multilink double wishbone rear suspension to a high rigidity torsion beam, allowing for more trunk space (+46 litres) The front suspension remain the same as the 2.0-litre.
