Geared for life?

Ever thought of a career in the motor industry? Westport College of Further Education is running a post leaving cert course in Motor Technology. On successful completion of the course graduates will receive a FETAC level 5 certificate.

The aim of the course is to prepare students for employment or further studies in the Motor Trade and related industries by introducing them to the main concepts and components of the motor vehicle.

The course is run over nine months from September to May, subjects include: Motor Vehicle Theory & Practice, Auto Electricity, Electronics, Mechanics or Diesel Engine Maintenance, Communications and Work experience. Students are encouraged to seek their own work experience, which is usually one day a week for 10 weeks.

Graduates may opt to continue their education in third level Institutes of Technology or seek employment directly in the trade as an apprentice mechanic, parts person, sales, reception, or warranty administrator. If on completion they decide that the motor trade is not for them, the experienced gained will be invaluable as they are most likely to own a car at some stage in their life.

Westport CFE has a well equipped garage workshop, where students can get hands on experience on cars, as well as training units, which allow students to train on individual systems such as engines, lighting and brakes away from the actual car.

Westport CFE is now accepting applications for the next term, which will commence in September. Although the course is mainly aimed at school leavers, mature applicants are also welcome to apply particularly those with an interest in classic cars or tractors.

Those who wish to apply can contact Westport CFE directly on 098 25241 or by logging onto www.mayovec.com where they can download an application form. Places are limited so don’t delay get your application form in A.S.A.P.
